None of them ruined your summer. But how many times did you think, “I really need to do something about that”?
September is a good time to turn those little frustrations into a boat upgrade list. Whether you’re still enjoying weekends on the water or starting to think about storage, the details are fresh in your mind.
Start with the things you kept working around.
“The washdown hose never reached where I needed it.”
If rinsing the deck meant stretching the hose to its limit or leaving one corner untouched, take a look at your setup.
Before choosing a replacement, measure from the washdown connection to the farthest area you regularly clean. Follow the route the hose actually takes around seats and other obstacles.
Then consider storage. Extra reach is useful, but you still need somewhere convenient to put the hose when you’re done.
Add to your upgrade list: A washdown hose with the reach you need and a manageable storage fit.
“Connecting the hose was more work than washing the boat.”
A stubborn connection or persistent drip can make a quick rinse feel like a chore.
Look at where the problem starts. Is water leaking at the connection? Are the threads damaged? Is the seal worn? Does attaching the hose require an awkward reach?
You may only need a replacement seal or compatible coupling. Identify the issue before replacing the whole assembly, and confirm the connection type and size before ordering.
Add to your upgrade list: Repair or replace the connection that keeps slowing you down.
“I could never get the seat quite right.”
Maybe the helm seat felt too close for you and too far away for someone else. Or adjusting it took enough effort that you usually left it alone.
Start by checking the existing slide mechanism for debris, wear, or loose hardware. Follow the manufacturer’s maintenance instructions before deciding an upgrade is needed.
If replacement makes sense, check the mounting dimensions, available travel, and compatibility with your seat and pedestal. The goal is an adjustment you can use comfortably.
Add to your upgrade list: Service the existing seat slide or find a compatible replacement.
“The TV was always in the way.”
Onboard space is valuable. A screen that blocks a cabinet, crowds a walkway, or only works from one viewing angle can become an everyday annoyance.
A TV pivot or lift system may give you more flexibility in how you use that space. Before choosing one, measure the screen, mounting area, and clearance needed throughout its movement. Check the screen’s weight and mounting pattern, too.
Think about where the TV belongs both when you’re watching it and when you’re finished.
Add to your upgrade list: A mounting arrangement that suits your screen and your boat’s layout.
“The windshield washer barely sprayed.”
If the washer gave you a weak stream or sprayed everywhere except where you needed it, put it on the list.
Check the nozzle for blockage and inspect the supply hose and connections. A weak spray doesn’t automatically mean the nozzle needs replacing; the problem could be elsewhere in the system.
If you do need a replacement, confirm fit and connection compatibility first.
Add to your upgrade list: Find the cause of the poor spray and replace the affected component.
Make the List Before You Forget
You don’t have to tackle every upgrade at once. Start with three questions:
- What bothered me most often?
- What needs repair before the next trip?
- What would make using the boat easier?
Take photos, record measurements, and note any part numbers while you’re onboard. Those few minutes can make shopping for replacements much easier later.
